Fire Destroys Five Shops in Ilorin Market on Sunday

On Sunday, an early afternoon fire at Ita-Amodu, Niger Junction, Ilorin, Kwara State, destroyed five shops and damaged part of a storey building. The Kwara State Fire Service reported that the incident occurred at approximately 1:36 pm.

Public Relations Officer Hassan Adekunle stated that the affected building housed three-bedroom flats and ten shops, with the fire severely impacting five shops and the parapet of the building. The presence of highly combustible materials, such as mattresses and sofa-making materials, contributed to the fire's intensity and rapid spread.

The first fire appliance arrived to find the blaze fully developed, necessitating the deployment of a second appliance to assist in firefighting efforts. Firefighters managed to control the fire by 2:05 pm, preventing it from spreading to neighboring properties.

Personnel from the Federal Fire Service joined the operation, enhancing the firefighting efforts. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Chief Fire Officer Alabi Muhammed commended the swift response of both agencies and advised traders dealing in combustible materials to prioritize fire safety.
