Fire Destroys 17 Shops at Sabo Market in Lagos

Early on Tuesday morning, a fire swept through Sabo Market in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, destroying no fewer than 17 shops. According to Olawal Afolabi, a spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the fire broke out at approximately 1:10 AM and was successfully contained to prevent further spread.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the inferno originated from an electrical surge in an adjoining stall. Fortunately, no lives or injuries were reported, and the emergency response team was able to salvage a significant portion of the affected area.

The assessment indicated that 17 out of 32 shops in that section of the market were damaged, with groceries, foodstuff, and other merchandise destroyed. LASEMA's permanent secretary, Olufemi Ok Osanyintolu, urged market leaders and traders to prioritize electrical safety and conduct regular inspections of electrical installations to prevent future incidents.

This incident follows another fire that occurred three days prior in the Ikosi area, which also resulted in no loss of life.
