Katsina Trader Loses Shop to Fire, Calls for Action

Abdullahi Izma Yamadi, a trader in Katsina, expressed devastation after losing years of hard work when a fire destroyed his shop and stock, estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of naira. The fire started at dawn and spread rapidly across the market, leaving traders helpless as flames consumed food items and textiles.

Despite a distress call, the Katsina State Fire Service arrived late, allowing the fire to cause extensive damage. Yamadi criticized the delayed response, which he believes exacerbated the situation.

The Katsina Central Market Trader Association described the incident as painful and highlighted ongoing challenges with emergency services, often requiring traders to raise funds for fuel to enable fire service responses. Although no lives were lost, Idri Gachi sustained serious injuries while battling the flames.

The association is urging the state government to empower fire services with adequate funding and equipment to prevent similar incidents in the future.
