Fire Destroys Church in Ondo, Possible Arson Suspected

A fire broke out at a church in Ondo at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, rapidly consuming the entire building. Witnesses reported that local residents attempted to extinguish the flames with buckets of water, but their efforts were unsuccessful as the fire intensified.

The Ondo State Fire Service was not reachable for assistance. The church leader, known as Iya Ewe, stated she had left the church on Sunday night without any naked flames and ruled out an electrical fault, as the church's electrical systems had been operational for years without issues.

She expressed concern over the extensive damage caused by the fire, estimating losses in valuables to be worth millions of naira. Iya Ewe alleged that the fire might have been deliberately set, suggesting the use of a flammable substance like petrol due to the fire's pattern.

Fortunately, no lives were lost, and there were no reported injuries.
