EU Disowns Fraudulent Compensation Scheme in West Africa

The EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS issued a statement in Abuja on Wednesday disowning a fraudulent compensation scheme that claimed to reimburse individuals whose funds were allegedly trapped in banks across West Africa. The scheme was based on a fake document falsely attributed to Thérèse Blanchet, the Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union.

This document claimed that the European Union and the World Bank were jointly implementing a recovery programme for citizens who lost money due to fraudulent fund transfers in Africa. The EU delegation clarified that neither the European Union nor the World Bank was involved in any such programme, labeling the document a scam.

They emphasized that the contact details provided in the document were fabricated and operated by fraudsters. The EU urged the public to disregard the fake document and to rely on official channels for authentic information, warning that scammers often exploit the names of international organizations.
