RASCOM Calls for Collective Telecom Investment in Africa

Timothy Ashong, the Director of the Regional African Satellite Communications Organisation (RASCOM), emphasized the necessity for African countries to collectively invest in telecommunications infrastructure to improve connectivity, especially in border areas. He made this statement during a roundtable meeting at the African Telecommunication Union (ATU) conference held in Abuja on Tuesday.

Ashong pointed out that no single institution can provide adequate network solutions independently, advocating for a reliance on broadband fibre and satellite technology to ensure seamless connectivity. He called for collaboration among satellite communication organizations to bridge the digital divide across Africa.

Additionally, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), urged African telecom regulators to strengthen collaboration for a robust network ecosystem.

Rimini Makama, Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management at NCC, noted the complexities of Africa's digital communications landscape and the shared responsibilities in protecting consumers and promoting competition.
