Fire Service Warns of EV and CNG Fire Risks in Nigeria

The Federal Fire Service (FFS), Lagos Command, has issued a warning regarding the increased fire risks associated with the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles in Nigeria. Chief Superintendent Badmus Abdulsamad stated that while EVs are statistically less prone to fires than petrol-powered vehicles, they present unique challenges due to their lithium-ion batteries.

These batteries can cause fires through thermal runaway, which generates extreme heat and can spread between cells. Abdulsamad explained that EV fires can produce toxic vapors and pose risks of reignition long after flames are extinguished.

He emphasized that tackling an EV fire requires a different approach than conventional vehicle fires, focusing on cooling the battery pack. Additionally, he warned of the dangers posed by high-voltage electrical systems and the potential for toxic substances to be released from burning batteries.

The FFS also cautioned against improper interventions during CNG vehicle fires, which involve high-pressure cylinders.
