FFS Warns on Electric Vehicle Fire Risks in Lagos

The Federal Fire Service (FFS), Lagos Command, has issued a warning regarding the unique challenges posed by fires involving electric vehicles (EVs). Chief Superintendent of Fire, Badmus Abdulsamad, presented the command’s preparedness strategy at the 3rd auto industry summit in Lagos.
He noted that while battery-electric vehicles are statistically less likely to catch fire than conventional petrol-powered vehicles, EV fires present distinct challenges due to lithium-ion batteries. These fires can be triggered by thermal runaway, which generates extreme heat and can spread between battery cells.
Abdulsamad explained that EV battery fires can produce toxic vapours and pose risks of reignition long after flames are extinguished. He advised that firefighters must focus on cooling the battery pack and may require large quantities of water over an extended period.
The FFS also cautioned EV owners to use certified charging equipment and maintain their batteries properly. Additionally, the command highlighted risks associated with compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles, particularly regarding high-pressure cylinders.
