FAW Withdraws Support for Infantino's Re-election Bid

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has become the first national football federation to publicly withdraw its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s re-election bid for the 2027-2031 term. This decision, announced on Monday, stems from a loss of confidence in Infantino's leadership, particularly following his controversial proposal to sell private investment stakes in the FIFA World Cup.

The FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco. The FAW criticized Infantino's governance, stating that recent failures in leadership and stakeholder engagement have led to this withdrawal of support.

The association emphasized that the proposal to commercialize the World Cup raised deeper concerns about FIFA’s decision-making process and governance. Infantino recently shelved the investment proposal amid widespread opposition, but the FAW's stance indicates that confidence in his leadership remains low.

This development may prompt other national federations to reassess their support for Infantino ahead of the FIFA Congress.
