Five Arraigned, Remanded in DSS’ Custody over 2022 Attack on Owo Catholic Church

Five individuals were arraigned in the Federal High Court in Abuja for their alleged involvement in the June 5, 2022 attack on the Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State. The attack resulted in the death of 40 people and injuries to 100 others.

The defendants, identified as members of the Al Shabab terrorist group cell in Kogi State, were charged with terrorism by the Department of State Service (DSS). Despite denying the charges, the defendants were remanded in DSS custody by Justice Emeka Nwite pending the commencement of the trial on August 19.

The prosecution requested the remand, while the defense sought access for the defendants' family members and lawyers. The judge granted both requests, emphasizing the importance of allowing the defendants access to legal representation for their defense.
