Five Foreign Nationals Abducted in Zamfara Mining Area

On March 14, five foreign nationals were abducted by armed bandits in the gold mining area near Arafah Village, Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State. The incident occurred around 11:15 AM when a large group of heavily armed bandits attacked the mine site, forcibly taking the workers to an unknown location.

Security personnel were deployed nearby but were unable to track the criminals, who vanished into the surrounding bush. This abduction reflects the intricate relationship between illegal mining and armed banditry in Zamfara, where the mining of gold, copper, and lithium has attracted both legitimate investors and violent criminal networks.

Despite a federal government ban on gold mining in Zamfara in 2019 aimed at curbing illegal mining and banditry, violence has escalated, with deaths linked to insecurity rising by 183% over four years. The ban has inadvertently empowered bandits, leading to increased attacks and kidnappings, while ordinary miners face extortion and coercion.
