Five States to Transform Local Security into State Police

Five state governments in Nigeria—Ondo, Kaduna, Anambra, Zamfara, and Abia—are preparing to transform their local security outfits into state police once the constitutional process for establishing state policing is finalized. This initiative follows the passage of an Executive Bill by the House of Representatives, marking a significant step towards decentralizing Nigeria's policing system.

The states believe their existing security agencies possess the necessary institutional framework, trained personnel, operational experience, and community trust for a successful transition. In Ondo State, the Amotekun Corps is being considered for conversion, with Allen Sowore, Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, stating that the corps has the requisite experience and community relationships.

Similarly, Kaduna State plans to convert the Kaduna State Vigilance Service (KADVIS) into a state police organization, with Commissioner Sule Shu’aibu emphasizing the government's commitment to strengthening KADVIS in preparation for the transition.
