First Lady pledges N2bn to boost Akwete textile heritage in Abia

Nigeria's First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has committed N2 billion in support for the Akwete weaving industry during a visit to the textile heartland in Abia State. The donation targets the development of production sites in Akwete town, located in Ukwa East Local Government Area, where women have long crafted the hand-woven fabric on vertical looms.

During her maiden trip to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village, Tinubu expressed admiration for the quality and craftsmanship of the locally produced textile. She highlighted the fabric's practical attributes, noting its softness and breathability.

The First Lady announced her personal commitment to wearing Akwete cloth—specifically a traditional buba and wrapper—should her husband, President Bola Tinubu, secure a second term in office. Tinubu framed the donation as part of a broader push to preserve Nigeria's cultural heritage and ensure traditional knowledge transfers to younger generations.

Officials present during the visit included Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and various dignitaries. She received the title of Ugo Nwanyi (Queen Mother) of Abia during the occasion.

The support aims to generate employment opportunities and strengthen economic activity in the state through expanded textile production. Akwete fabric represents a centuries-old craft tradition unique to the region, produced entirely by hand using methods passed down through generations of weavers.
