Lagos State Implements Mandatory Waste Sorting to Boost Recycling Efforts

Lagos State, through the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), is enforcing waste sorting at the source as a key component of its waste management strategy. Dr.

Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of LAWMA, disclosed the plan, emphasizing the move towards modernizing waste management to unlock economic value and promote recycling. The initiative aims to shift from treating waste as sole disposal to viewing it as a valuable economic resource.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's vision is to transition away from landfills and focus on material recovery and recycling. The new policy emphasizes the importance of citizen behavior in achieving a cleaner and healthier Lagos.

Sanctions have been imposed on underperforming private sector waste operators, with a focus on improving operational capacity and infrastructure. The initiative underscores the significance of waste sorting at the source to achieve a more sustainable waste management system in Lagos.
