Aviation Stakeholders Demand Stricter Laws for Passengers

Stakeholders in Nigeria's aviation industry are calling for stricter labor laws to safeguard passengers during flight disruptions caused by aviation unions. Captain Samuel Caulcrick, an industry consultant and former Rector of the College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria, highlighted the need for legislation that prevents industrial disputes from affecting passenger travel.

His comments followed a recent disruption of flights by aviation unions, particularly the picketing of Air Peace, which left many passengers stranded. Caulcrick noted that passengers, who fund the aviation system through various charges, have little influence over disputes among airlines and unions.

He pointed out that passengers often incur significant financial losses and missed opportunities due to these disruptions, as they lack representation in negotiations. Caulcrick compared Nigeria's passenger protection framework unfavorably to the European Union's compensation system, advocating for stronger protections for travelers during labor disputes in the aviation sector.
