Wike Enforces Demolitions to Prevent Flooding in Abuja

On Wednesday, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), declared the need for decisive action against individuals obstructing water channels in Abuja. Following an inspection of ongoing projects, he stated that the FCT Administration had initiated a broader enforcement operation aimed at restoring the Abuja Master Plan and mitigating flooding risks.

Wike confirmed that the demolition of illegal structures would extend beyond Maitama, where the exercise began on Tuesday, to other areas of the FCT. He asserted that structures blocking waterways pose significant dangers to communities by disrupting natural water flow.

Wike dismissed criticisms regarding due process in the demolitions, arguing that public safety must take precedence over individual interests. He remarked, “Sometimes when you are in a mad community, you also have some level of madness to contain them,” reinforcing the administration's commitment to uphold planning regulations without retreat.
