FMAFS Partners with Wave to Enhance Crop Disease Control

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, under the leadership of Sen. Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, is taking steps to strengthen its collaboration with Wave, particularly in the area of crop disease control to enhance food security. During a recent visit by a Wave delegation led by Deputy Executive Director Prof. Angela Obiag Eni in Abuja, the Minister emphasized the urgent need to combat emerging and existing plant diseases that threaten agricultural productivity and food systems across Nigeria.

The ministry committed to working closely with Wave and relevant stakeholders to validate critical policy documents and align them with Nigeria's agricultural priorities. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was entered into to deepen collaboration and strengthen institutional processes.

Prof. Angela Obiag Eni highlighted Wave's role in strengthening early warning systems for managing transboundary plant pathogens. The meeting also included discussions on leveraging existing nationwide cassava viral disease epidemiological datasets to support plant health surveillance in Nigeria.
