FG Partners with IFDC to Enhance Fertilizer Access

On a recent date, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Marcus Olaniyi Ogunbiyi, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) in Abuja.

This agreement aims to improve fertilizer access for farmers and achieve food sovereignty in Nigeria. The partnership will address core challenges that hinder smallholder farmers, such as the affordability and timely distribution of fertilizer.

The MoU emphasizes the need to strengthen the fertilizer supply system, expand soil testing, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Dr.

Ogunbiyi noted that Nigeria's fertilizer consumption is approximately 18.6 kilograms per hectare, below the Abuja Declaration target of 50 kg/ha. The agreement also aims to enhance the agricultural value chain and improve livelihoods, contributing to economic growth and rural development.

Mr. Bayella Thiam, IFDC Executive Director, pledged continued technical and logistical support for Nigerian farmers under this partnership.
