Nigeria's Government Prioritizes Food Security Initiatives

The Nigerian government, represented by Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Mohammed Idri, has prioritized food security as essential for economic stability and poverty reduction. In a statement during a quarterly citizen stakeholder engagement session in Abuja, Idri noted that approximately 34.7 million Nigerians across 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory face severe food and nutritional insecurity from June to August 2026.

The administration of President Bola Tinubu is implementing reform programs designed to strengthen agricultural productivity and the food supply chain, aiming to stabilize prices, create jobs, and reduce poverty. Idri emphasized the government's commitment to transparency and citizen involvement in policy-making.

He also mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance security in farming communities and improve infrastructure, including roads and power, to support agricultural expansion. The minister called for collaboration with stakeholders, civil society, and the media to transform Nigeria's agricultural sector and build resilient food systems.
