Football Icon, Christian Chukwu Laid To Rest In Enugu

Christian Chukwu, a football icon and former Super Eagles captain and head coach, was laid to rest in Enugu after passing away at the age of 74 on April 12. The burial ceremony, which lasted nearly 10 days, included a night of tribute in Lagos and a football colloquium.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State praised Chukwu as a source of inspiration whose humility and discipline touched many lives. Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt Rev Samuel Ike, highlighted Chukwu's contributions to Nigerian and African football, noting his leadership in winning the Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980.

Chukwu's son, Chukwuemeka Chukwu Jr, thanked dignitaries and football stakeholders for honoring his father. Born in Enugu, Chukwu was regarded as one of Nigeria's greatest defenders and led Enugu Rangers and the Super Eagles to victory.

Notable figures present at the burial included former Labour Party presidential candidate.
