Former INEC Chair Yakubu Assumes Post as Nigeria's Ambassador to Qatar

Professor Mahmood Yakubu has taken up his appointment as Nigeria's Ambassador to Qatar, arriving in Doha this week to formally assume the diplomatic posting. Yakubu's transition from his previous role as head of the Independent National Electoral Commission marks a shift from election management to international diplomacy in the Gulf region.

The assignment comes after he concluded his leadership of the electoral body in late 2024. Senior officials from Qatar's government received Yakubu upon his arrival at Hamad International Airport.

Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, director of the protocol department at Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led the welcoming ceremony. The reception included representation from across the African diplomatic corps, with at least 13 African ambassadors present at the airport to greet the new Nigerian envoy.

Beyond the formal diplomatic reception, the arrival drew participation from members of Nigeria's diaspora community in Qatar. Officials including the president of the Nigerian diaspora organisation in the country attended the event, signalling broader engagement with Nigerians based in the Gulf state.

The secretary-general of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum also joined the welcoming delegation. Yakubu's appointment is intended to advance Nigeria's interests in the region across several areas.

According to official statements, his role will encompass strengthening economic ties, promoting trade and investment opportunities, and fostering engagement with the Nigerian community abroad. His background in managing Nigeria's domestic institutions is expected to inform his approach to the Gulf posting.
