Prof. Mahmood Yakubu Begins Role as Nigeria's Ambassador to Qatar

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who concluded his tenure as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in late 2022, has officially resumed his role as Nigeria's Ambassador to Qatar.

His appointment was made by President Bola Tinubu and is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Nigeria's economic and foreign policy interests in the Gulf region. Upon his arrival in Doha on Wednesday, Yakubu was welcomed at the airport by Ambassador Ibrahim Fakhro, the Director of Protocol at the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with representatives from the African diplomatic community.

Yakubu's new role is critical as Qatar is a significant player in global diplomacy and energy markets. His responsibilities will include fostering partnerships in various sectors, including agriculture, real estate, aviation, and digital infrastructure, to attract foreign direct investment from Qatar's substantial sovereign wealth fund, which holds assets worth approximately $500 billion.
