Jonathan Calls for Information Integrity in Democracy

Former President Goodluck Jonathan spoke at a conference in Abuja, advocating for information integrity as a cornerstone of democracy. He highlighted that citizens can make empowered democratic choices when media, civil society organizations, and electoral institutions collaborate to combat misinformation.

Jonathan noted the rise of conflict-driven information manipulation and digital propaganda, urging stronger partnerships among governments, civil society, and international media to promote media literacy and build resilient societies. He warned that access to factual information is critical for transparency in the electoral process and called on governments to support media initiatives that strengthen democracy and protect human rights.

The conference also featured remarks from Zhou, a diplomat from China, who emphasized the importance of media in strengthening bilateral relations between China and Nigeria. Frederick Idehai discussed the evolution of information warfare and the establishment of a network to combat misinformation across Nigeria, aiming to promote credible information management.
