Adebayo Warns of Nigeria's Shrinking Democratic Space

Prince Adewol Adebayo, the former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has raised concerns regarding the shrinking democratic space in Nigeria, particularly under the administration of President Bola Tinubu. In a statement issued by his media office, Adebayo warned that the political environment is increasingly favoring the ruling government, which could lead to a narrow democratic space ahead of the 2027 elections.

He pointed out the combination of voter apathy and internal crises within opposition parties as critical issues that undermine political competition. Adebayo expressed skepticism about ongoing coalition talks among opposition figures, suggesting that the lack of discipline and shared values within these alliances could further erode public trust and reinforce the ruling party's dominance.

He emphasized the need for the opposition to address internal disputes before forming coalitions and highlighted the real threat to democracy as the growing disengagement of citizens who no longer view the political system as responsive or inclusive.
