Nnaji Aims to Unseat Enugu Governor Amid Legal Woes

Uche Nnaji, the former Minister of Science and Technology, is positioning himself to contest the 2027 Enugu State governorship elections, aiming to unseat current Governor Peter Mbah. Nnaji's motivation stems from concerns over ongoing investigations into his academic credentials, specifically allegations of forgery regarding his university degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.

Reliable sources indicate that Nnaji is aware of Section 308 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, which provides immunity to governors from civil and criminal proceedings during their tenure. He believes that winning the governorship would protect him from imminent prosecution linked to the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission's (ICPC) investigation, which began in February 2023.

The ICPC's probe was prompted by findings from a special investigative panel led by Tunji Alausa, concluding in March that Nnaji's academic documents were fabricated. Nnaji's political future appears uncertain as he navigates these legal challenges while attempting to secure a political lifeline through the governorship.
