Lagos Residents Fortify Homes with Enhanced Security Measures

In Lagos, home security measures are evolving as residents increasingly install CCTV cameras, stronger gates, and access controls to protect their properties. A March 2026 report by The Guardian revealed that communities are closing off streets with iron gates and barriers, often guarded by local security personnel.

The Lagos State Government mandated CCTV installation in buildings of six floors and above along major roads starting January 2025. Wealthier homeowners are opting for bespoke automated gates, which can cost ₦10 million or more.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps reported in August 2026 that CCTV footage was instrumental in identifying a burglary suspect in Akure. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated in December 2025 that Lagos' investment in surveillance helped prevent 172 house-robbery attempts.

This trend raises questions about the reliance on personal wealth for security, as many homeowners are increasingly fortifying their homes and streets.
