FRSC Launches Movement to Combat Overloading in Nigeria

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and key stakeholders in the transportation sector launched the National Movement for Safe Loading and Safe Roads to address overloading and unsafe loading practices, which are significant contributors to road crashes, infrastructure damage, and economic losses. This initiative was announced during a National Breakfast Policy Dialogue held in Abuja, themed “Ending Overloading, Saving Lives: A National Commitment to Safer Roads and Responsible Transportation in Nigeria.” Stakeholders emphasized the need for a coordinated approach involving various sectors, including government, transport operators, cargo owners, regulators, drivers, professional bodies, civil society, and the media.

The dialogue is expected to lead to the adoption of the Abuja Declaration 2026, which will outline clear responsibilities, measurable commitments, timelines, and monitoring mechanisms. Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed stated that overloading should be viewed as a major road safety and economic development challenge, highlighting the dangers of excessive loads and improper loading practices.
