Dangote Refinery Raises Fuel Prices, Commuters Struggle

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery recently raised its PMS ex-gantry price from N1,265 to N1,350 per litre, marking a 6.7 percent increase amid rising international crude oil prices, which reached $108 per barrel. This adjustment has resulted in filling station operators increasing prices, with motorists now paying between N1,395 and N1,460 per litre, and some areas seeing prices near N1,500 per litre.

The rising fuel costs have significantly impacted commuters, forcing many to alter their travel habits. Mrs. Abisola Pedro, an entrepreneur and mother of three in Lagos, has limited her car use primarily to school runs and religious activities due to high fuel costs.

Rehoboth Caleb noted that rising transport fares are compelling some commuters to walk longer distances or leave home earlier to find cheaper transport options. The situation poses a challenge for workers and low-income earners, whose incomes have not kept pace with the rising costs of transportation and living expenses.
