South Africa Faces Sharp Fuel Price Increases Despite Tax Cuts

Fuel prices in South Africa are experiencing a significant increase, with diesel projected to rise by seven rand per liter, marking a 40 percent jump, while petrol will see a 15 percent rise. This surge follows a temporary reduction in fuel tax announced by the government to alleviate the pressure on consumers amid growing economic concerns.

The reduction, amounting to three rand (0.18 per liter), is expected to cost the government six billion rand (approximately 352 million USD) in foregone revenue. Despite this intervention, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana acknowledged the high fiscal cost and the uncertainty surrounding funding, indicating that additional measures may be considered to support households affected by the rising costs.

The government is also facing criticism regarding the expected 93 percent increase in paraffin prices, a critical energy source for low-income households.
