ICPC Files Charges Against Ex-Gov El-Rufai for Fraud

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has filed ten charges against former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai and co-defendant Joel Adoga at the Federal High Court in Kaduna. The charges allege severe financial misconduct, including fraud and violations of Nigeria's anti-money laundering laws.

Specifically, the ICPC accuses El-Rufai of inflating payments amounting to N579.7 million and receiving foreign currency deposits totaling $817,900. During the arraignment, which took place under tight security, both defendants pleaded not guilty.

Justice Ridwan Aikawa ordered their remand in ICPC custody pending further proceedings. The charges date back to various periods, including September 2020 and January 2023, involving sums such as N289,826,998.12 and $320,800, which were allegedly acquired unlawfully.

The ICPC's actions highlight ongoing efforts to combat corruption within Nigeria's political landscape.
