Abia State's Democratically Elected Governors Listed
Abia State, known as "God's Own State," was created on August 27, 1991, during General Ibrahim Babangida's military regime, carved from the old Imo State. The first military administrator was Air Vice Marshal Frank Ajobena.
Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu became the first democratically elected governor after winning the 1991 election on the National Republican Convention (NRC) platform, taking office in January 1992 until November 1993, when military rule resumed under General Sani Abacha. He was re-elected in 2003 and later associated with the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). Theodore Ahamefule Orji succeeded Kalu in 2007, winning on the PPA platform and later joining the Peoples Democratic Party.
