Otti Confirms Four-Year Tenure for Abia Local Officials

Dr. Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State, clarified that the 17 council chairmen and 184 councillors elected during the local government elections on November 2, 2024, will serve a four-year term. This announcement was made during his monthly media chat, ‘Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,’ held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia.

The governor addressed previous speculations regarding the tenure of local government officials, which suggested a two-year term based on past provisions. Otti explained that the Abia State House of Assembly amended the local government law prior to the elections to extend the tenure to four years, meaning these officials will remain in office until 2028.

Additionally, Otti introduced a technology-driven Citizen Engagement Centre aimed at enhancing governance and facilitating communication between residents and the government. He also expressed concern over rising health issues among young Nigerians and disclosed that the state government spent over N500 million in August on support for vulnerable populations.
