Key Governors of Adamawa State Since 1991

Adamawa State was created on August 27, 1991, from the former Gongola State. Since its establishment, the state has experienced a combination of military and civilian administrations, particularly during the military era before the Fourth Republic began in 1999.

The first democratically elected governor was Abubakar Saleh Michika, who won the governorship election on the National Republican Convention (NRC) platform, taking office on January 2, 1992. His tenure ended on November 17, 1993, when military rule resumed.

Michika passed away on March 10, 2018. Following Nigeria's return to democracy, Boni Haruna became governor on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform on May 29, 1999.

Initially, he was the running mate to Atiku Abubakar, who later became the PDP presidential candidate. Haruna was re-elected in 2003, serving two consecutive terms until May 29, 2007.

He is recognized as one of the longest-serving governors in Adamawa's democratic history.
