NFVCB's Impact: Notable Film Bans in Nigeria

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has played a significant role in regulating films in Nigeria since its establishment in 1993/94. Over the years, it has banned several high-profile movies for various reasons, including cultural sensitivity and public interest concerns.

For instance, on February 23, 2015, a film was banned due to sexually explicit scenes, which the NFVCB cited as a public interest issue. Another film scheduled for release on April 25, 2014, was banned because of its heavy focus on the Biafran War, with fears that it could incite violence.

Additionally, a film was banned from online distribution for its LGBTQ+ theme, violating the 2014 Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act. On November 8, 2021, Marvel's film was prohibited due to a same-sex kissing scene.

On January 13, 2020, another film was temporarily removed from cinemas for portraying the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as incompetent, but it was later returned after adjustments.
