Gas Generation to Remain Key in Nigeria's Power Sector

Engr. Vincent Ozoude, the Managing Director/CEO of Transafam Power Limited, asserted that gas-fired generation will continue to be the backbone of Nigeria's electricity system for the foreseeable future, even as renewable energy sources expand.

He made this statement during a panel session at the NOG Energy Week in Abuja, themed “ReEngineering Africa’s Power Market — Driving Reliable Energy Systems.” Ozoude highlighted the importance of strengthening the gas value chain, implementing market reforms, and embracing digitalization to improve the energy sector. He noted that while solar energy is significant for Nigeria's energy future, gas-fired generation is crucial for stabilizing the grid, as renewables alone cannot meet the current base load.

He pointed out Nigeria's abundant gas reserves as a key opportunity to bridge the gap between installed capacity and actual power delivery. Ozoude also discussed the role of technology in enhancing efficiency and integrating various energy sources.
