Gaya Loses NDC Senate Ticket to Batayya in Kano

Kabiru Gaya, who served in the Senate from 2015 to 2023, has lost his ticket to return to the Senate as the NDC chose Alkasim Ibrahim Batayya, the former president of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), as their candidate. Mansur Kurugu, a spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya movement, confirmed Batayya's emergence as the consensus candidate during a meeting held at Miller Road in Kano.

Gaya has accepted the decision and promised to give maximum support to Batayya in his bid to win the Senate seat. The consensus process will continue until the seat is decided without necessarily going through a primary election.

Gaya's defeat is seen as a political setback, especially after he had previously defected from the APC to the NDC. Batayya is expected to battle Kawu Sumaila, who is contesting on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), for the Senate seat in the 2027 elections.
