Gbajabiamila Appointed to Lead National Policing Bill Committee

Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been inaugurated to lead the Committee on the National Policing Bill at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This committee includes members such as the Attorney General of the Federation, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, and representatives from the Nigerian Governors' Forum.

The establishment of this committee follows the National Assembly's passage of a constitutional amendment that allows for state police, which is part of President Tinubu's proposal for a dual policing structure comprising federal and state police services. The committee is tasked with producing a draft bill that will facilitate the implementation of the constitutional amendment and ensure the operationalization of state police.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has pledged the support of the 36 state governors for the swift implementation of this reform, emphasizing the need for community-based policing. The Attorney General, Lateef Fagbemi, highlighted the urgency of ratifying the constitutional amendment to address Nigeria's security challenges.
