Tinubu Launches Committee for State Police Implementation

On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a committee to implement the state police framework at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This follows the Senate's passage of a constitutional amendment to establish a dual police structure comprising federal and state police services.

Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff, will chair the committee, which includes the Attorney General of the Federation, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, and representatives from the Nigerian Bar Association and the Nigeria Governors Forum. The committee is tasked with producing a draft bill for the National Assembly to facilitate the operationalization of state police.

Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi emphasized the importance of this initiative in addressing Nigeria's security challenges. The committee is expected to recommend legal instruments for a smooth implementation of the dual police system, urging governors to expedite the constitutional amendment process.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State expressed support for the initiative, highlighting the need for community-based policing.
