Geregu Power Reconnects to National Grid After Shutdown

Geregu Power Plc has successfully reconnected to the national electricity grid following the rehabilitation of its GT13 generator transformer, ending a shutdown that lasted over six months. This reconnection took place at approximately 8:48 am on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, as confirmed by the Acting Managing Director, Engr. Muhammed Sani Jaoji, during a press briefing in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

The shutdown was attributed to system turbulence, grid collapses, and transformer bushing failure. Jaoji described the reconnection as a significant milestone in the company's recovery program under its new ownership, MA’AM Energy Limited, with a goal to generate about 10 percent of Nigeria's total electricity consumption.

The recovery efforts will continue with the rehabilitation of the second thermal power transformer, expected to be synchronized with the grid in September 2026, followed by a third unit in October. The Head of Maintenance, Engr. Bernard Siaka, noted that the GT11 unit had been out of production since May 27, 2023, and attributed previous failures to a major system overhaul conducted by a different company than the original equipment manufacturer, Siemens.
