Germany Sets Four Conditions for Self-Employed Residency

Germany has announced four specific conditions that self-employed foreign nationals must meet to qualify for a settlement permit, which is the permanent residence title in the country. According to the Make it in Germany portal, foreign nationals holding a temporary residence permit for self-employment under Section 21 of the Residence Act can apply for a settlement permit after completing three years of self-employment.

The conditions include holding a valid residence title for self-employment, having operated a business for a minimum of three years, demonstrating a sustainable growth trajectory for the business, and proving that both the applicant and their family members can cover their living costs without state support. Meeting these requirements makes an individual eligible to apply under Section 21 (4) of the Residence Act.

The portal also advises foreign nationals outside the self-employment category to consult the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) for relevant settlement permit routes.
