Germany Sets Five Criteria for Foreign Residency Permits

Germany has published five conditions that foreign nationals must meet to qualify for a settlement permit after completing vocational training or academic studies in the country. This permit, governed under Section 18c of Germany's Residence Act (AufenthG), allows skilled workers to transition from temporary to indefinite residency.

The conditions include: 1) holding a residence permit for employment as a skilled worker for at least two years; 2) working in a role authorized by their current residence permit; 3) contributing to Germany's statutory pension insurance for a minimum of 24 months; 4) demonstrating German language proficiency at B1 level and basic knowledge of Germany's legal and social systems; and 5) providing proof of adequate living space. Additionally, there is an application fee, which can be up to approximately €150, depending on the applicant's status group.
