Germany Sets Business Startup Conditions for Foreigners

Germany has outlined the conditions foreign nationals must meet to establish and run businesses in the country, as per guidance from the Make it in Germany portal. Foreigners can either register as freelancers (Freiberufler) or set up a commercial enterprise (Gewerbe) as self-employed individuals.

Both options necessitate an appropriate residence permit, with distinct conditions for each. Self-employed entrepreneurs must apply for a specific residence permit, demonstrating genuine commercial interest, regional demand, and secured funding.

Notably, foreign graduates from German universities or those with research permits are exempt from some criteria. All applicants must prove financial self-sufficiency, with additional pension proof required for those over 45.

The self-employment residence permit is initially valid for up to three years and can be extended if the business is viable. After three years, successful applicants may qualify for a settlement permit, allowing indefinite residence in Germany.

Fees apply at various stages, with amounts varying by location and purpose.
