Germany Offers 18-Month Work Permit for Graduates

The German government has confirmed that international graduates from outside the European Union can obtain a residence permit for up to 18 months to search for work after completing their studies. This post-study job search permit allows holders to take any type of employment during this period, not limited to their field of study.

To qualify, applicants must provide proof of completed studies, valid health insurance, and evidence of financial self-sufficiency without relying on public funds. It is crucial to note that this permit cannot be renewed; graduates who do not find qualified employment within the 18 months will not be able to extend the permit under the same category.

Applicants are encouraged to consult the relevant foreigners authority in Germany before submitting their documents, as requirements may vary by local office. Citizens from EU member states and certain other countries do not require a visa or residence permit, providing them with greater flexibility compared to graduates from third countries.
