Ghana Seeks BRICS Membership to Boost Economy and Jobs

Ghana's government has officially approved plans to apply for membership in BRICS, a strategic move to enhance the country's economic partnerships and stimulate investment, job creation, and industrialisation. This decision was announced by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who stated that the Cabinet of President John Mahama authorized the preparations for the application.
The government is set to engage with current BRICS members to garner support for Ghana's membership bid. Ablakwa emphasized that joining BRICS would provide Ghana with opportunities to attract investment, create employment, and promote industrial development, thereby increasing the economic value derived from its natural resources.
He noted the significant growth in trade with India, which has more than doubled from approximately $3 billion in 2024 to around $7 billion. Ablakwa expressed Ghana's intention to leverage its relationships with BRICS countries to enhance domestic industries and improve the processing of raw materials.
