Iran and Nigeria Strengthen BRICS Ties and Cooperation

On August 28, 2023, Iran and Nigeria initiated efforts to deepen their bilateral relations and enhance cooperation among Global South nations, particularly within the BRICS framework. This development arose from a working lunch hosted by Iran’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Gholamreza Mahdavi Raja, for Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode.

The meeting allowed both envoys to discuss the current state of Iran-Nigeria relations, Nigeria-South Africa relations, and significant regional and international developments. Raja stated that discussions emphasized the important role Iran and Nigeria can play within BRICS and explored opportunities for increased collaboration among developing economies.

He noted the potential for strengthening ties among Global South countries, especially as they seek partnerships beyond traditional geopolitical and economic alliances. Raja described the exchange with Fani-Kayode as constructive and acknowledged Fani-Kayode’s extensive political experience and knowledge, which enriched the discussions.
