GCAA's Rev Arthur Announces Plans to Reduce Airfares

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), under the leadership of Director General Rev Stephen Wilfred Arthur, announced measures on September 25, 2026, to lower domestic airfares amid concerns over high ticket prices. The GCAA aims to encourage more airlines to enter the domestic market and reduce operating costs, including the removal of import duties on aircraft spare parts.

Arthur stated that while airfares are not fixed by the GCAA and are determined by market forces, the regulator can intervene against anti-competitive practices. The GCAA emphasized that safety and security would remain priorities as competition increases.

Key cost drivers for high airfares include aviation fuel, which accounts for 30-35% of operating costs, and significant foreign-exchange exposure. The GCAA's efforts are in response to growing pressure on the Ghanaian government to address high domestic air travel costs, with the aim of making air travel more affordable and supporting growth in the aviation sector.
