FG Approves Major Upgrades for Eastern Ports to Boost Trade

The Federal Government has approved the comprehensive modernization and upgrade of Onne, Rivers, Delta, and Calabar ports to address congestion at Lagos ports and improve international trade efficiency. Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced this approval on September 27, describing it as a significant step in transforming Nigeria's maritime infrastructure.

This initiative expands the port modernization program beyond Lagos, where upgrades for Apapa and Tin Can Island ports were previously approved. Oyetola stated that the focus on eastern ports aims to reduce cargo traffic concentration in Lagos and strengthen alternative gateways for trade and regional economic activity.

The upgrades are expected to enhance cargo handling, reduce vessel turnaround time, improve regional connectivity, and make goods movement more predictable and cost-effective. Oyetola noted that President Bola Tinubu prioritizes infrastructure renewal and economic diversification in the Renewed Hope Agenda, highlighting the importance of modern ports in facilitating trade, attracting investment, and creating jobs.
