Ghana to Host Global Reparations Conference in 2026

Ghana is set to convene a global reparations conference from June 17-19, 2026, in Accra, following the United Nations' adoption of a resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as one of the gravest crimes against humanity. The announcement was made by Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the conference expected to be attended by Ghana's President John Mahama, who serves as the African Union's champion for reparations.

The event will gather heads of state, diplomats, scholars, activists, and representatives from international organizations to discuss the next phase of the global reparations agenda. The conference will focus on translating the historical resolution into actionable frameworks and is anticipated to produce a document outlining collective efforts to develop coordinated policies for sustained international engagement.

Ghana's Foreign Minister Samuel Ablakwa emphasized that the reparations fund will be used to address the damages caused by slavery and support educational initiatives. The conference will also coincide with Juneteenth, fostering deeper collaboration among participating states and the African diaspora.
