Ghana to Present UN Resolution on Slave Trade in 2026

Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced plans to table a historic resolution at the United Nations, declaring the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity. This resolution is scheduled for consideration and adoption by the UN General Assembly on March 25, 2026, coinciding with the International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Slavery.

The initiative aligns with commitments made by former President John Mahama during his address to the UN General Assembly last year. The resolution aims to formally declare the trafficking and enslavement of Africans as a significant historical injustice that continues to affect socio-economic realities globally.

The date of March 25 was chosen to honor the memory of victims and to address the structural inequities stemming from this historical atrocity. Ghana's efforts are supported by the African Union and seek to promote reparatory justice, with activities planned leading up to the resolution's presentation, including a wreath-laying ceremony at an African burial ground in New York on March 24, 2026.
