TikToker Sentenced for False Claims Against Mahama

Camilla Alhassan, a Ghanaian TikToker, was sentenced to one year in prison by the Accra Circuit Court after pleading guilty to publishing false information regarding former President John Dramani Mahama. The court convicted her for engaging in offensive conduct, specifically for a viral TikTok video in which she falsely alleged that Mahama was involved in burying 32 cows as part of a ritual to secure victory in the 2024 presidential elections.

The video attracted significant attention on social media, prompting the Ghana Police Service to arrest Alhassan. Although multiple charges were filed against her, defense lawyer Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu noted that some charges were struck out due to lack of jurisdiction.

The trial judge emphasized the need for a firm judicial response to the growing trend of spreading defamatory information on social media. Alhassan's conviction is part of broader efforts by Ghanaian authorities to combat misinformation and protect reputations in the digital space.
